People are not one-dimensional beings. We are not purely physical, but have emotions, subtle energies, a thinking mind and a spiritual side. When one part of us is out of balance, oftentimes another will need help as well. For instance, when we have chronic pain, our stress levels also escalate, our breathing shortens and we often feel depressed. Thus help for chronic pain may be multi-dimensional. My goal as a yoga therapist is to offer you a holistic approach to wellness with physical yoga poses, breathing exercises, mediations and more to help balance the body, mind and/or spirit. Yoga therapy addresses the multi-dimensions of ourselves and aids in our journey towards happiness and wholeness.
It is very important to work within your doctors’ and therapists’ recommendations, so I welcome all guidance they provide for you and hope to partner with them to assist in your wellness journey. And since yoga therapists do not diagnose, if you don’t know the cause of your issue, it is helpful to work with your health care specialists first to get a diagnosis. Then I can tailor your custom yoga therapy program more quickly to meet your needs. My hope is that I can help you eliminate, reduce or manage your symptoms of suffering, to strengthen weak muscles, to improve range of motion and to increase balance of body and mind.
How Does Yoga Therapy Work?
Yoga therapy typically works one-on-one or occasionally in small groups devoted to a similar topic or area of concern. Benchmarks are noted on starting points, individual goals are created for each person, and then progress is documented.
Individual sessions begin with you completing a six-page in-take form that I send to you. This is where you explain your primary concern for seeking yoga therapy along with answering a number of questions about your condition and your health history. At this point you decide if you want one yoga therapy session or multiple ones. Your number of sessions can always be changed over time.
A typical yoga therapy program is six sessions, although some conditions can be addressed in 3 sessions or even a single one. The first session is primarily an assessment, where we discuss your intake form, I ask some follow-up questions, and we begin to dive into your primary reason for coming to me. I will do a postural assessment, possibly take some range of motion measurements if needed, along with testing for muscle flexibility/tightness and strength/weakness. I will also give you a breathing assessment, which can provide key information to re-establishing healthy breathing when pain or stress has pulled you out of normal, healthy respiration. All of this information provides a baseline for where you are today, so we can document your progress over time. You and I then work together to create several yoga therapy goals specifically for you.
After the assessment I will give you a short yoga therapy practice to address at least one of your goals. After the assessment you will be given a handout that includes descriptions, photos and sometimes links to videos that form your practice (or “yoga therapy homework”) so you can repeat this practice at home. The assessment is typically 75 to 90 minutes. Subsequent sessions will be 60 minutes long.
Each session will address your yoga therapy concern at a slightly different angle. Over time we will discover what works best for you, and we will build on that. You will leave each session with a new custom yoga therapy practice for you to continue at home. These home practices can be quite short (10-15 minutes) or longer (30-60 minutes) if desired. You choose what works for you.
At the end of the six sessions, you will have a multitude of yoga therapy tools (including yoga poses, postural alignment guidance, movement sequences, breathwork practices, mindfulness techniques, sound therapy options, affirmations, and other positive healing practices) that help you in advancing and/or maintaining your yoga therapy goals in the future. We will also check in with your yoga therapy goals that you created during your first session to determine what progress you have made.
