
Tuesday Night Shanti Shuffle … Karma Yoga: Yoga Nidra for Insomnia
Think of your deepest, most relaxing Savasana, and then maybe go even deeper into rest. That’s what Yoga Nidra is. This class is a guided meditation specifically designed to address insomnia. It promotes deep rest, helps reduce your stress and hopefully will give you a better quality sleep. How does it help insomnia? First yoga nidra uses simple pranayama (breath control), which when done in a particular way, will trigger the relaxation response. Your brain will shift from beta (an awakened state with lots of brain activity) to a much more relaxed, deeper state. It’s like “powering down” leading us to a slower, more restorative nervous system.
It is not intended for you to fall asleep during class, but if you do, no worries. It sometimes happens. But if you can stay with the guided meditation it may nourish you even more than sleep and may help you sleep better when it truly is time to go to bed.
