Yoga for Scoliosis ONLINE Workshop

Ever since I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 16, none of my doctors every offered me anything that I should be doing to take care of my spine and reduce my pain other than being told (when I was 16) to take up swimming, “which might help.”  That seems wrong to me.  So when I was in my low 40s I began a search for something that would help my spine.  After two decades of yoga training, four years of yoga therapy training and then numerous workshops with yoga teachers, osteopaths, and Ayurvedic practitioners, I have landed on great practices that help me stand upright, release muscular tension in my body and greatly reduce my pain.  If you too have a curvy spine, I want to share what I know with you.

I’m starting off with two workshops devoted to “Yoga for Scoliosis.”  One will be ONLINE for those that are not local or can’t make the in-person date and the other is IN-PERSON at The Shepherd’s Center in Winston-Salem, NC.  They will essentially be the same content, although you know the questions you raise and the ability to work online (better visual presentations at the beginning) or in-person (where we are both in the same room) will make them slightly different.

But in both workshops I will teach you about the four major types of spinal curves in Scoliosis and why it’s important to work differently with your convex versus your concave sides of the thoracic and/or hips.  We’ll also learn at least one or two series on how to release muscular tension in our hips, low back, mid back, shoulders and neck.  And we’ll also do a new series I haven’t taught before:  “Twelve Key Yoga Poses for Scoliosis.”  This could be your new practice ongoing to help your curvy spine!

AFTER the workshops (starting in June), I will start a 9-class series specifically for those with scoliosis.  I’m thinking we may do 2 classes per month for several months.  They won’t necessarily be in this order but here are the topics I want to teach:

  • Elongating a Spine with Scoliosis
  • De-rotation of your Ribs and/or Hips for Curvy Spines
  • Strengthening the Weak Sides of our Spine (plus Help for our Winging Shoulder Blades)
  • Reducing Sacroiliac Pain for those with Scoli
  • Reducing Neck, Shoulder & Thoracic Pain for Curvy Spines
  • Yoga for Osteoporosis + Scoliosis (some of us have both!)
  • Fascia Relief for Scoli
  • Daily Life & Scoliosis (How to Sit, Stand, Ride in a Car or Plane or Sleep with a Curvy Spine)
  • Creating your own Custom Practice that is best for your particular Scoli Curves

 

These classes will all be taught online so they can be recorded.  You can sign up for one or all.  More info on those later.
